The Role of Journalism in Ethics and Accountability: Why Asking the Question is So Important

The Ethics Centre welcomes Gemini award winning broadcaster Anna Maria Tremonti. Host of CBC Radio's current affairs program The Current (and former host of CBC TV's the fifth estate), Ms. Tremonti will speak about the role of the media in tough times. It is precisely when times are tough, she will argue, that journalists have a responsibility to ask the tough questions -- and to ask them of everyone, including those with power and influence. Journalists risk criticism when asking questions directly related to ethics and accountability. But to those who maintain that it is unethical or wrong to ask, she replies that it is unethical NOT to ask.

Getting it Right When Things go Wrong

Maple Leaf Foods recently managed a crisis of significant proportions when 21 people who died of listeriosis were linked to their products.

The company’s values were fundamental in the day-to-day decision making and communications efforts. Preparedness plans and simulations help you manage the first few days of a crisis but only entrenched values, visible leadership and a great team allows you to deal with a full blown crisis lasting months. Linda Smith, a communications consultant who works with Maple Leaf, will join us to talk about being part of that team and the lessons learned during the recent listeriosis outbreak.
